Why Most QR Codes on Business Cards Fail

What about white modules on a dark background (reverse QR)?

Reverse QR codes (light modules on a dark background) look cool but fail more often. The phone's autofocus and exposure system expects the QR code to be a dark pattern on a light field. Test Checklist Before You Print

A QR code that works perfectly on screen can fail on a printed card. Here's what changes:

Glossy vs matte finish.

Glossy cards look premium, but the surface creates glare under direct lighting. A QR code under a desk lamp, track lighting, or even a phone's flashlight can become unreadable because the glossy reflection washes out the modules. Matte or uncoated paper doesn't have this problem โ€” it diffuses light instead of reflecting it.

If you must use glossy: keep the QR code away from lighting hotspots. If your card has a logo on the front that's usually glossy, consider making the QR code section matte spot-varnish, or order a matte finish for the entire card.

Minimum dot size for commercial printers.

Commercial offset printers have a minimum dot size around 0.2mm. Digital printers can usually go down to 0.1mm.
