The 7 Tells of AI-Generated Text
AI writing isn't bad writing. It's recognizable writing. After reading a few hundred AI-generated paragraphs, the patterns become obvious:
1. The "Delve" Problem
Certain words appear in AI text at 10-50ร their natural frequency: delve, tapestry, multifaceted, landscape, realm, furthermore, moreover, consequently, pivotal, nuanced, robust, comprehensive. These aren't wrong. They're just overrepresented in training data from academic and formal writing. When every paragraph "delves into" something, the reader's pattern-matching brain flags it.
2. The Balanced Paragraph Structure
AI loves the template: Topic sentence โ supporting detail โ elaboration โ counterpoint โ synthesis. Every. Paragraph. Humans write lopsided paragraphs. Some are one sentence. Some ramble. Some end abruptly. Perfect structural balance is itself a tell.
3. The Three-Item List
AI defaults to enumeration in threes. "The three key factors are X, Y, and Z." "This approach offers speed, accuracy, and scalability." Humans sometimes list four things. Or two. Or none.
4. No Voice
AI text has no personality. No unexpected word choices. No humor. No anger. No regional idioms. It reads like it was written by committee โ technically correct, stylistically sterile.
5. The Frictionless Transition
Every paragraph flows into the next with a perfect transition sentence. Real human writing has abrupt topic shifts, non-sequiturs, and section breaks that aren't bridged by a transition.
6. Hedging on Everything
AI avoids strong claims. Everything is "it's important to note that," "this suggests that," "it could be argued that." Humans make bold, unqualified statements. They're sometimes wrong. AI is rarely wrong โ because it rarely takes a position.
7. The Abstract Opening
AI articles start with grand, abstract framing: "In today's rapidly evolving digital landscape, the intersection of technology and communication has created unprecedented opportunities for..." Humans start with a specific example, a question, or just get to the point.
How AI Humanizers Actually Work
AI humanizers are just LLMs with different prompting. They don't have some magic "human style" model. They're the same models, told to:
- Vary sentence length aggressively (mix 3-word and 30-word sentences)
- Avoid the overused word list (delve, tapestry, robust, etc.)
- Break structural patterns (some short paragraphs, some long)
- Add opinion and personality markers ("honestly", "here's the thing", "I think")
- Use contractions, fragments, and informal constructions
- Include concrete examples instead of abstract frameworks
The better humanizers use specialized fine-tuned models trained on human-written text with the specific goal of producing output that's stylistically distinct from standard LLM output. But at base, it's still an LLM generating text โ just with the "formal-academic" knobs turned down and the "casual-human" knobs turned up.
How to Humanize AI Text Manually (7 Patterns to Break)
You don't need a tool. You can edit AI text yourself. Here's the checklist:
- Kill the opening paragraph. It's always generic scene-setting. Start at paragraph 2. Or write the opening yourself โ a specific anecdote, a surprising stat, a question the reader actually has.
- Break the balanced-paragraph rhythm. Insert a one-sentence paragraph. Then a longer one. Then a fragment. Vary paragraph length like you vary sentence length.
- Replace 5+ overused AI words. Ctrl+F for: delve, tapestry, multifaceted, landscape, realm, furthermore, moreover, consequently, pivotal, nuanced, robust, comprehensive, intricate, paramount. Replace each with a simpler, more specific word. Or delete the sentence entirely.
- Add a strong opinion. AI text is opinionless by default. Add a sentence that takes a side: "This approach is overrated." "Most people get this wrong." "Here's what actually works."
- Add a concrete example. Replace "organizations can benefit from structured data management" with "Our team cut CSV cleanup time from 2 hours to 5 minutes by fixing three encoding issues." Specific. Measurable. Real.
- Cut transitions. Remove 50% of transitional phrases ("furthermore," "in addition," "on the other hand"). See if the text still flows. It usually does.
- Read it aloud. If you trip over a sentence, rewrite it. Human speech has rhythm. AI text doesn't.

A Note on AI Detectors (And Why They're Unreliable)
AI detectors claim to identify AI-generated text. They're wrong a lot. OpenAI discontinued their own AI detector in 2023 due to low accuracy. Independent testing shows most detectors have 30-40% false positive rates โ meaning they flag real human writing as AI-generated a third of the time.
The fundamental problem: detectors look for the same statistical patterns that humanizers try to remove. It's an arms race. A detector trained on GPT-4 output misses Claude output. There is no mathematically sound way to distinguish "text written by a statistical model optimized to sound human" from "text written by a human who writes like a statistical model."
